From 23 September to 23 February 2008, I turned a new dream into reality. I participated in an expedition to one of the most extreme environments on earth the North Pole.
The Ancient « Antarctica ».The « Tara » served as a platform in the middle of the ice-flow that we used as our laboratory for our scientific experiments as part of the cadre of the International Polar Year (A European funded programme).
Through this adventure, I succeeded for the first time in combining my passion for sailing, the sea, remote unoccupied areas, the communal life, writing, photography and filmmaking.
These photographs were taken using a Numeric camera (the Argentinean films could not withstand the cold) and are the fruits of a meticulous labour. They were taken during the four months that we were plunged into the total darkness that is the polar night. Before joining the Tara, I realized that no black and white photographs existed of the North Pole during the « long night ». So I attempted to chronicle, and so accurately document that period of our lives, in that particular environment. From our everyday tasks to the extraordinary, every detail of life at the Pole.
The absence of natural sunlight gives these photographs a nearly unreal air. Time has stopped and the men have been transformed into blurred ghost-like figures. Everything is blanketed in poetry, where the imagination can run wild.
